Transport of passengers increases by 6.9% in national airports while transport of goods by rail accounts for a growth of 11.5% - 4th Quarter 2010
25 February 2011

Summary
In the 4th quarter of 2010 most of the modes of transport observed an overall positive evolution in the transport of passengers, when compared with the same period of the year before. The outstanding increase of 6.9% in the passengers transported in national airports is worthy of note, along with further increases of 1.3% in light railway systems and 0.8% in heavy railway transport but with a downward trend in inland waterways transport of passengers (-2%). As far as the transport of goods is concerned, and still considering year-on-year variations, the dynamic performances in railway (+11.5%) and sea (+8.1%) modes are noted, in contrast with air mode (-1.7%). However, in road transport mode (3rd quarter of 2010) the total of goods transported decreased by 6.1% towards 2009, although compensated by the total volume of transport (+13.3% in tonnes-kilometre).
