In 2023, there were 41 452 companies belonging to a group in Portugal, which represented 7.9% of the total number of companies, concentrated 40.7% of the persons employed, 63.3% of the turnover, 59.4% of the gross value added (GVA) and 66.9% of the gross operating surplus (GOS) (8.0%, 40.4%, 63.9%, 57.7% and 62.6% in the previous year, respectively). Compared to 2022, the number of companies belonging to a group grew by 3.9%, persons employed, turnover, GVA and GOS increased by 6.5%, 3.7%, 17.2% and 22.6%, respectively.
In 2023, 27.7% of the companies in the Financial services sector belonged to a group, followed by the Manufacturing and energy and Information and communication sectors with 11.7% and 11.0% of companies belonging to groups, respectively, concentrating 81.5%, 66.2% and 79.5% of the GVA generated by the respective sectors.
The average annual remuneration and the apparent labour productivity of the companies belonging to a group were higher than those registered by the remaining companies: EUR 23.8 thousand versus EUR 15.6 thousand and EUR 59.6 thousand versus EUR 28.3 thousand, respectively.
