Passenger transport increased in 4th quarter, but global results for 2022 still below 2019 levels - 4th Quarter 2022

Summary

In the 4th quarter of 2022, national airports handled 13.9 million passengers, corresponding to an increase of 41.9% compared to the same period of 2021. Compared to Q4 2019, there was an increase of 3.7%.

In the same quarter of 2022, 45.9 million passengers were transported by train and 62.1 million by metro (+15.5% and +27.6%, respectively, compared to Q4 2021). Compared to the same period of 2019, there were decreases of 6.3% and 17.1%, respectively.

In the 4th quarter of 2022, the transport of passengers by inland waterways increased by 20.1% compared to Q4 2021, reaching 4.5 million passengers, and decreasing by 15.0% compared to Q4 2019.

Regarding freight transport: by air there was a decrease of 0.9% compared to Q4 2021 (-3.8% vis-à-vis Q4 2019); by rail there was a decrease of 3.1% (+0.8% compared to Q4 2019); by sea there was a decrease of 3.6% (-7.0% compared to Q4 2019); and by road there was an increase of 0.4% (-11.5% compared to Q4 2019).

Preliminary results for 2022 reveal an increase in passenger transport by air (+121.7%; +39.2% in 2021), by train (+42.1%; +18.1% in 2021), by metro (+58.5%; -2.4% in 2021) and by inland waterways (+42.5%; +2.0% in 2021). Compared to 2019, there were variations of -5.6%, -2.1%, -19.3% and -16.8%, respectively.

In relation to freight transport, preliminary results for 2022 reveal an increase by air (+16.9%, after +29.7% in 2021) and by sea (+2.3%, +4.7% in the previous year). Compared to 2019, there were variations of -5.8% and -0.4%, respectively. Regarding land transport, rail transport decreased by 3.2% (+11.4% in 2021) and road transport declined by 2.2% (+11.5% in 2021), in both cases there is still no recovery compared to 2019 (-3.6% and -7.1%, respectively).

In 2022, oil pipeline transport increased by 28.3% compared to the previous year (+7.6% in 2021; -5.7% compared to 2019). Regarding gas transportation by pipeline, there were decreases in inputs (-4.3%; -0.1% in 2021; -7.6% compared to 2019) and in outputs (-4.8%; +0.3% in 2021; -7.5% compared to 2019).
