Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 1.6 million guests and 4.0 million overnight stays in March 2022, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of +464.1% and 543.2%, respectively (+503.8% and +523.5% in February, in the same order). The levels reached in March 2022 were, however, lower than those observed before the pandemic, with reductions of 15.3% in guests and 12.7% in overnight stays compared to March 2019.

In March, the domestic market contributed with 1.3 million overnight stays and the external markets totalled 2.7 million. Compared to March 2019, there were decreases in overnight stays from non-residents (-16.5%) and, to a lesser extent, from residents (-3.6%).

In March, 31.6% of the tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (36.7% in February; 60.4% in March 2021 and 43.8% in March 2020).

In the first quarter of 2022, overnight stays increased by 398.5% (+176.2% in residents and +845.6% in non-residents). Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays decreased by 18.8% (-1.6% for residents and -26.4% for non-residents).
